A question of animal cruelty

In 1966 animal cruelty hadn't really been addressed as a problem. Therefore, the movie shows the REAL shooting of a dog and skinning/gutting of a cow. During this period of time, real animal rights movements (like PETA which was established in 1980) hadn't been created and so the movie industry was free to use animals in almost any way they saw fit.
